OPERA DIRECTOR ON WGUC

Evans Mirageas, Cincinnati Opera Artistic Director,
to be Contributor on Cincinnati Public Radio Special programming begins May 6 with Opera Preview
following final Metropolitan Opera broadcast on 90.9 WGUC
CINCINNATI—Cincinnati Opera and Cincinnati Public Radio, Inc. are pleased to announce that Evans Mirageas, Cincinnati Opera artistic director, will be a regular contributor on 90.9 WGUC and 91.7 WVXU beginning May 6, 2006.
A former producer for the nationally renowned WFMT radio station in Chicago, Mr. Mirageas will offer insightful remarks about opera and art songs broadcast on WGUC. The collaboration will begin on WGUC with an Opera Preview by Mr. Mirageas, on Saturday, May 6, at 4:30 p.m., immediately following the Metropolitan Opera’s final 2005-2006 season broadcast. Additionally, Mr. Mirageas will contribute to 91.7 WVXU’s arts and cultural magazine Around Cincinnati.
“Radio has been woven like a thread throughout the past forty years of my life with work as a producer and host on WUOM, Ann Arbor and WFMT Chicago, the radio stations of Boston, The BBC when I lived in London, and of course, the Met Opera broadcast quiz,” said Mirageas. “It is a joy to contemplate the opportunity of being a regular presence on WGUC, a station I have known and respected since the early 1970s. I look forward to sharing my love of vocal music with the loyal audience of public radio in Cincinnati.”
“We are delighted to add Evans as one of our regular contributors,” said Richard Eiswerth, WGUC CEO and general manager. “Not only does he have an encyclopedic knowledge of opera, but his stories are inspiring and his enthusiasm about opera is contagious.”
Mr. Mirageas is widely considered one of the most talented and respected artistic leaders in the classical music industry today. He brings to Cincinnati Opera a broad range of experience in both operatic and symphonic music, as well as a long history of successful partnerships with many of the world's leading singers, including Renée Fleming, Angela Gheorghiu, Cecilia Bartoli, and Luciano Pavarotti, among numerous others. Mirageas's varied career in classical music has included Senior Vice President of Artists and Repertoire for the Decca Record Company, Artistic Administrator to Seiji Ozawa at the Boston Symphony, and casting director for the new Eliot Goldenthal/Julie Taymor opera Grendel.
In 1973, Mr. Mirageas began his radio career as an on-air host and live broadcast producer while he was a student at the University of Michigan. In 1982, Mr. Mirageas was hired by WFMT in Chicago to help create a nationally syndicated program series previewing upcoming classical music events. While in Chicago, he also produced the national radio broadcasts of The Lyric Opera of Chicago, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, among others.
